Taking Shots:
Tall Tales, Bizarre Battles, and the Incredible Truth About the NBA

Taking ShotsBy: Keith Glass

The NBA is in trouble. And as NBA agent Keith Glass describes it–he's part of the problem! If team owners are willing to throw millions of dollars his way for marginal players, why should he be the only one with the self–restraint to say "no?"

In his insightful, funny, and often mind–numbingly bizarre tales of life in the NBA, Keith Glass lets it fly from half–court. He'll tell you how we got to the present state–where an agent who makes millions off the game can't sit through one; why our NBA stars couldn't capture Olympic gold; why one of the greatest high school players he ever saw ended up in Attica prison instead of the NBA; why selfishness has attached itself to the league; and why the game he loves is in dire need of help.

With informative chapters such as "How to Feed Your Family on Only $14 Million a Year," "Eighty–one Feet of White Centers," and "From 6'11" to the 7–Eleven," Glass shatters the myth of NBA marketing: that everything about the game is great, that tickets are worth over $100 apiece, and that as long as the fans in the luxury boxes are happy and weighed down with jerseys and merchandise, all is well.

But have no fear! Keith Glass will not preach about the evils of highlight film slam–dunks and gangsta rap tattoos–he'll just have you falling down laughing as he flagrantly fouls the league that was once the home of Jordan, Magic, and Bird–not to mention Wilt, Russell, Kareem and all the greats in between.

Keith Glass has coached basketball at the high school and college levels (he was an assistant coach at UCLA), and has been a longtime agent for NBA players. He lives in Rumson, New Jersey, with his wife, Aylin Guney Glass, who played professional basketball in Turkey. He is the father of five children—Sami, Tyler, Alex, Maggie, and Lucas.

Statistician's Digest: Linear Weights - Estimated Pts Produced

"... Please, give me an example of linear weights formula... "

Basically linear weights claims to obtain points or something like points as a mark from a formula that looks like this:

Points Created= a*PTS + b-*AST + c*OR + d*DR + e*STL + f*BLK - g*TO - h*(FGA-FGM) - i*(FTA-FTM) - j*PF - k*FF - l*DQ

In some versions of this formula, the result is scaled by a factor that accounts for whether the team (or player's team, if it's applied to a player) played at a faster or slower pace than normal. Generally is assigned the value of 1 to each of the weights, a' through i', and 0 to the others. Read the Discussions in the eBA Basketball Statistics Forums

Statistician's Digest: Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis

"... How to measure the influence over the 'Bench Points Percentage', in the case of a season starter which in any o some games, by some reason of injury or coach decision, come from the bench and plays nearly its minutes played average? ..."

A relevant contribution of the eBA System is to take the bench points of our team AND from the opponents not only as a Stats quantity, but as a center part of a game basketball analysis.
You can see it's analysis and discussion of the Bench Points Percentage Stats at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis area, which includes, among others, the following aspects:
Bench Scoring= game's total, by quarter, at each quarter by separate, at game' last five minutes, shooting averages, changes quantity by game, etc. from our team and from the opponents teams all over the season.

Commentary: The Bench Scoring Stat are more relevant at the college level. Most players who goes on to the NBA may scores 20 points a game at least once a season. Nevertheless, many a winning college team gets exposed in the NCAA for its lack of depth at their bench.

Statistician's Digest: Home Court Advantage Really Exists

Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams. Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.
This indicates that in the first half of the season, home teams are in a general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation of 70-75% of winning percentage.

During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree. This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.
Why this difference between the two halves of the season ?

On the remark that average score margin is highly mutually related to the quality of being able to win, we must take into consideration that average score margin can be adjusted for force of games agenda and variations in day-to-day ability.

A 2/3 winning record of home teams is often cited as attest that home court advantage really exists. But all the analysis records neither validate nor contradict that the home court advantage exists, only give us the necessity of a way to calculate it more carefully.

Coach's Digest: About the Available Rebounds

In the case that a team does miss a shot, it can prolong its possession and give itself an additional chance to score by rebounding its own misses. Team rebounds per game, team offensive rebounds per game, etc, are not a worthwhile stat, that a statistical myth:

Oreb% = Offensive Rebs / (Offensive Rebs + Opponent's Defensive Rebs)

In this way, we only measure how many rebounds a team catches based on what's available. For example, if you use "team offensive rebounds per game," a team that shoots 30% is probably going to catch a lot of offensive rebounds, whether they're a good rebounding team or not. If you use Oreb%, you're looking at a ratio of how many rebounds a team grabbed compared to how many were available.

pictures
Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

Rebound percentage: The percentage of all available rebounds that a player or team catches, often fails into offensive rebound percentage and defensive rebound percentage. This is a better measure of rebounding physical ability than rebound rate because it adjusts for game pace, although total rebound percentage is distortioned by the ratio of offensive and defensive rebound opportunities. Therefore, a team with a really great defense will have its total rebound rate artificially exaggerated because defensive rebounds are much easier to catch. Usually, rebound opportunities are estimated for players based on the team's rebound opportunities per minute, but play-by-play data as that used by the eBA System can identify a player's exact opportunities.

Rebound percentage for teams = Reb / ( Reb + OPPReb )

Rebound percentage for players =
( Reb * Min ) / (( TMReb + OPPReb ) / ( TMMin / 5 ))

Statistician's Digest: How are assists awarded in the NBA ?

"... How are assists awarded in the NBA? Is it a pass that results in a basket with no dribbles, one dribble, etc., in between? As in the NBA everything is different: are there specific guidelines for official scoring ? ..."

Basically, there is no difference with another leagues in this category, only the eBA System have a special treatment with the assists. According to the NBA’s statisticians' manual, an assist is credited to the player tossing "the last pass leading directly to a field goal if, and only if, the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating immediate reaction toward the basket." An assist can be credited if a receiving player takes a dribble, so long as he makes an immediate reaction toward the basket.

Rules Corner: 3-pointer Attempt & Simultaneous Foul - Rule & Statistics:

Great Basketball Pictures
" ...We have this situation: when player A2 attempts a 3-pointer, after the ball leaves his hands, opponent B1 fouls A1 in the lane and the referee calls it.

What should be the call and the statistician's register:
A1 foul received ? A2 3-pointer attempt ? A1 or A2 goes to the line ? ..."

The basket is good: it counts. Now:
1) if the team B is not in the penalty / bonus, team A is given possession of the ball for a throw in;
eBA Statistical Register: 3 points made for A2 and Forced Turnover for B2.

2) if the team B is IN the penalty / bonus, A1 goes for the free throw line and not shooter A2;

Coach's Digest: The Hop Step Definition

Hop Step: A particular move which can create excellent shot chances and more variety in player's arsenal. Player begins to drive to the basket with his strong hand. When ready to hop, bounces the ball hard. At the same time, jump off his foot that is opposite to the ball. In mid-air, hold the ball with both hands being sure to land on both feet at the same time ( if not, it is traveling ).

When the player is closer to the basket, he shoots it or dish it for an easy bucket. If the defender is playing the shooter to a certain side, he must hop to the opposite direction. For example, if the defender is playing the shooter to the right, then hop to the left.

Vladimir Tkachenko

Vladimir Tkachenko - Guadalajara, 1989

A great example of a gentle Giant, Vladimir Tkachenko (or Tatachenko) was also a great center. He succeeded yet was always a gentleman, always apologizing to those that happened along his massive body. Tkachenko was coordinated for his size but was not very quick. Nice shooter out to 15-17 feet. Very unselfish. He would have more rebounds but teammates got some of the boards because Tkachenko would block out 2 or three guys at a time... The first giant of Europe, in many countries, they still use phrases like "you're as tall as Tatchenko".

Statistician's Digest: Transformed Data in a Basketball Game Analysis

As we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic ONLINE, sometimes, we transform data from a basketball game analysis, for example, to make fit the number of turnovers from one team to the steal of the other in relation to the total of possessions adding it to the statistics of the "team player".

I've never been a "fan" of transforming data, because you need a reason for log transformation. There are many types of transformations too.
but now, if you decide to do a transformation, then you should do the hypothesis test using transformed data.

The reason I don't like transforming data, is because interpreting the results is always problematic: telling a head coach about the log of the data points will always get you a puzzled look, and this is not good.

If the data are skewed badly enough, then you may want to consider:
a.- finding probable causes for the "outliers" and removing them, or
b.- using a nonparametric method.

However, if there's a really, really good reason, then there are virtually unlimited ways to transform data, as we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic - just make sure you pick the one that meets your analytical needs....

Coach's Digest: Player's Peak Age in the NBA and Europe

Some rigidly accurate studies conducted using linear weights ratings like PER and Wins Produced, have shown that the peak age in the NBA is about 27, and in Europe 28.
However, knowing the base of this researches, we must take in account also that young players tend to be overrated by their box score stats.
Is it possible that in the light of our eBA Clinics investigations, peak age is truly older than 27 or 28 shown by those studies.

Statistician's Digest: Statistics Heuristic Method Concept"

"... What is referred to as the heuristic method in statistics terms ? ..."

A heuristic is a particular technique of directing one's attention in learning, discovery, or problem-solving. It is originally derived from the Greek "heurisko" (ευρίσκω, the verb from which Archimedes's famous exclamation of "eureka" was derived), which roughly means "I found". The term was introduced in the 4th century AD by Pappus of Alexandria.

Statistician's Digest: Statistics Analysis & Court Positions

" ...From the point of view of the statistical analysis: how do you define a player's position ? Is it primarily a player's role in the offense ? A player's height ? A player's defensive range in terms of quickness, strength, and height ? Is it possible to have two centers or point guards on the court, or does one of them become a '2' or '4' ? How significant is the difference between a 2 and a 3? Which is the importance and the influence of the position in the basketball statistical analysis ? From the moment that player's position is often left out of most basketball analysis systems, is there in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System the factor position as a parameter of a study ? How necessary are the traditional positions? Have the eBA System studies or theories presented that reinforce the convention of having a point guard, a second guard, a small forward, a power forward, and a center ? ..."

It is absolutely necessary that we begin thinking in terms of roles rather than positions. Our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System describe and classify these roles and works in this terms.
As soon as possible we must trash traditional positional designations — at least with regards to our statistics analysis — and start working on something more important: player roles. Basketball game developed so much from that time when positions were an early attempt to describe roles. To refer nowadays to those traditional designations is a pass back. Not open to doubt that every team needs what traditionally is a point guard, a far-seeing, sure-handed player to initiate an offense once the ball has been brought upcourt. But today, more and more teams plays with players who can't manage other point guard duties but are still used to initiate offense. Therefore, what the teams need is a player who will set up the offense and get the ball to where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. You can call him a PG, but in terms of statistics analysis you can't forget to recognize the primary existence of roles.

This theme is developed in my first exposition "Statistics & Statisticians" at the Basketball Statistics Registration Course in eBA Clinics.

The Basketball Team Statistician as a Professional Career

"... From the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System requirements point of view the Basketball statistician must do this work on a full-time basis and must be eligible for a good compensation: as we are speaking about a professional career as a sports statistician. Although the reality show us that most persons who do sports statistics do this on a part-time basis and are paid, sometimes, only for the day for individual games.

It must be understood that the 'Basketball game analysis' is not a matter of collect sports results and provide the leagues and the media with significant information for their clients different and varied needs. ..."

"... The Basketball Team Statistician must have the skills to control, verify and examine once again his work all the time, in order to avoid mistakes. He must confront all his work against the play-by-play, being vitally necessary a team work. ..."

"... The Basketball Team Statistician must be capable to read and understand a technical statisticians guide and make deep analysis having the ability to make sound decisions during the game. ..."

Rules Corner:
Shot & Foul: What causes a ball to be Out of Bounds ? - Rule & Statistics
:

About the NBA Rule:
• The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches a player who is out-of-bounds or any other person, the floor, or any other object on, above or outside of a boundary or the supports or back of the backboard.
• Any ball that rebounds or passes directly behind the backboard, in either direction, from any point is considered out of bounds.

About the FIBA Rule Nr. 5:
Art. 23 Player out-of-bounds and ball out-of-bounds.
23.1 Definition
23.1.1 A player is out of bounds when any part of his body is in contact with the floor or any object other than a players, on, above or outside the boundary line.
23.1.2 The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches:
• A player or any other person who is out-of-bounds.
• The floor or any object on, above or outside the boundary line.
• The backboard supports, the back of the backboards or any object above the playing court.
23.2 Rule
23.2.1 The ball is caused to go out-of-bounds by the last player to touch or be touched by the ball before it goes out-of-bounds, even if the ball then goes out-of-bounds by touching something other than a player.
23.3.2 If the ball is out-of-bounds because of touching or being touched by a player who is on or outside the boundary line, this player causes the ball to go out-of-bounds.
23.2.3 If a player(s) move(s) to out-of-bounds or to his backcourt during a held ball, a jump ball situation occurs.

Great Basketball Pictures

Commentary: From the said above, we understand that the rules for both NBA and FIBA are quite the same: the ball can touch edges of the backboard, however when the ball touches back of the backboard (or the supports) it is out-of-bounds.
It is important, before closing this commentary, to read the related topic about Rule 4.35.2 at "Out of bounds: with BOTH feet ?" as part of this summary.
Once in a game under NBA based rules, a player recovered a loose ball at high speed near the side line, proceeded to dribble but was losing his balance trying to stay in bounds. The player in this case put the dribble down, touched out-of-bounds briefly, and then touched the ball again only after returning to the playing court. There was no call from the refs. In U.S.-based rules, one can make an argument for that being called out-of-bounds, but one can also make the case that it was an "interrupted dribble" and thus did not meet the criteria.

Wayne Brabender's name is synonymous with basketball success both in the Upper Midwest and overseas in Spain. A Minnesota-Morris basketball star from 1965-67, Brabender was named the Cougar's Most Valuable Player in the 1966-67 season in addition to garnering NIC all-conference team honors that same season.

He was also selected as a NAIA All-American in 1967. Brabender still holds school records for career scoring average (23.6 points per game) and single season scoring average (24.3 points per game). In 1967, Brabender was drafted by the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He went on to play 16 years professionally in Spain with Real Madrid. A six-time European all-star, he was named MVP in Spain six times and, in 1973, he was chosen as European MVP. Brabender also had the honor of playing basketball for the U.S. in the 1972 and 1980 Olympics and coaching in the 1988 Games.

Coach's Digest: The Alternate-possession Rule Must Change ?

" ... Why the alternate-possession rule must be changed ?

- An inspired defensive effort by a trailing team should not be undone because it's the other team's turn to take possession.
- An official's inability to consistently make a fair toss should not alter the rules of the game.
- The rule really penalizes a great defensive effort. You can make a great defensive play but late in the game Team B forces a jump ball, an alternate possession goes to Team A who scores the goal in the last second to win the game.
- When they try to make the game too fair, they take away the whole reason for competing. It shouldn't be a 'fair' factor. It should be whomever is aggressive enough to get his hands on the ball. That's the unknown about any sport. That's what makes the sport interesting.

Why changing the alternate-possession rule would not be efficient ?

- For the same reason it was established the potential for a toss that gives one team an unfair advantage over the other.
- A late-game jump ball, in an intense sequence, increases the possibility of injury to officials.
- At least some advantage is gained from tying up the ball, even if it is only reversing the possession arrow.
- The alternative is worse. In many instances, one or the other team has a dominant big man who almost always controls the tip. ... (posted by: louis_c) ..."

Statistician's Digest: Ball against the Backboard Case & Registration

"... A player has not yet dribbled, throws the ball against a backboard and catches it again before the ball has touched another player. ...
Can this player begin a dribble.... ? ...

Rule's Basis= If a player deliberately throws the ball against a backboard ( not attempting a legitimate shot for a goal ), this is considered the same as if that player has bounced the ball on the floor. If the player then touches the ball again before it has touched ( or been touched by ) another player, this is considered to be the same as a dribble.

Game Rule= After catching the ball ( ball comes to rest in his hands ) the player in this case may shoot or pass but may not begin a new dribble.

eBA Statistical Registration= In case the player in this case makes a new dribble has committed a violation and we register an unforced turnover.
