The eBA DVD Best Seller of this Month:
"2006-2007 NBA Champions - San Antonio Spurs (2007)"

Starring: Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli and Gregg Popovich
San Antonio Spurs 2007

1 Disc Set ~ 104 Minutes Long ~ Studio: Warner Home Video - Release Date: July 17, 2007

This 2007 DVD does have some good bonus features and the main featured video is excellent. Unfortunately, the 2007 DVD doesn't have the entire fourth quarter broadcast for each Spurs close out game for every round. However, the bonus features are plentiful and well done. The main video (featuring the recap of the season) is also very good. It is over an hour long:

* The series against the Jazz was only a footnote. The Spurs didn't sweep them, they were blown out in game 3, and there were two ejections.
* They placed too much emphasis on Tony Parker in the finals. Yes, he was the MVP and he deserved it. Ginobili was shut out in game 3 (excluding foul shots), his performance rivaled Parker's in game 4 and his final run and foul shots guaranteed the Spurs win.
* They included highlights from the last two championships.

The best Spurs championship DVD they could make would include every playoff game in full, but that's unrealistic.
Therefore, this is definitely the best thing though about 2007 Spurs Champions ! .

Statistician's Digest: Statistics Registration ? Official´s Win ?

"... This are the Triway Titans Basketball last 30 seconds of the 2007 season. The video analysis shows clearly that the basket is NOT valid, so what for the analysis ? How we register this play ? Official´s winning ? ..."

All our basketball statistics forums are plenty of this type of video-questions about statistics analysis: the statistician and / or the game analyst must register what happen in the game, and not to analyze the official's calls. Another people do this...

This is not an "correctable official error" case ( see this thread at eBA Forums ) neither we have possibility of giving a "team turnover" in order to avoid punishing a player twice ( see this thread at eBA Forums ).

Game is over, register the three-pointer missed by #11 White, and the offensive rebound and winning goal by the #33 white player under the basket and over the head of #30 Blue after a bad defensive move.

The only thing you can do is a commentary about this situation in the play-by-play report, for example, about the the bad defensive move of #30 Blue in the rebound defense...

UNFORGETTABLE BASKETBALL LEGENDS: CHARLES BARKLEY

Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?
Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?
is the most personal and important book Charles Barkley has written.

He lays himself open here, and because he does, he brings the same straight talk out of everyone with whom he engages in his journey around America to talk about the things that matter most and are the hardest to say - things having to do with race, and money, and identity.

Why is it that we can talk about all sorts of big issues, but when the subject of race is raised, we all freeze up ?

Charles Barkley - 1991-92: his last season with the 76ers

Barkley was a great Basketball player who was never afraid to speak his mind on any number of topics. In this book, he attempts to discuss the controversial issue of race in America by interviewing 13 prominent men and women from an assortment of fields. Sports columnist and TV host Michael Wilbon (Washington Post, ESPN) has acted as editor.

Coach's Digest: Minutes Played, the Foul Trouble & Fouling Out

"... How to make a statistical calculation of the player's missed playing time ascribable to fouls ?
Is there in the the eBA System some data about the player utilization and substitution set of rules in the foul trouble case ? That means to say, when they are sent to the bench and after which foul number ? ..."

To calculate missed playing time ascribable to fouls, we must base our analysis in the following assumptions about player usage and substitution patterns:

In FIBA & NBA:
No change when a player commits his first foul.
Committing his second a player foul would be replaced and have to wait at the bench until the half of the second quarter.
A player committing his third foul would be replaced and would be a bench player until the third quarter.
With the critical (in FIBA) fourth foul committed a player would be replaced and have to sit until the beginning of the the fourth quarter.
In NBA:
A player committing his fifth foul would have to be out of the game until the half of the fourth quarter.

Now, how often do players foul out of a game ? When the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul happens ? Which percentage of the players with the 4th. FIBA or 5th NBA foul are fouled out ?

- 49% of the 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA come with about 3 minutes left in the game: remember to consider, 40 minutes in FIBA and 48 in the NBA !
- 82% of all players who perpetrate a 4th. fouls FIBA or 5th. fouls NBA do not foul out.

This is reasonable from the moment the studies from eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System demonstrates that even the most players having a tendency to foul lose only a few minutes per game because of their foul trouble. But they play the great majority of their minutes near the danger of fouling out.

The analysis of the different types of Foul Trouble, are studied in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic: next Course opens on October 1st., 21:00 GMT.

Coach's Digest: Are the FG% values going down ?

"... Are the FG% values going down ? From the values we studied at the last eBA 113 Basketball Statistics Analysis Course, corresponding to the archives since 1988, we can see that the FG% values are declining...
Is this due to better defenses, or to players entering the league lacking shooting fundamentals ?
Maybe this had something to do with the declining efficiency and productivity ? ..."

1 - It's a combination of both reasons mentioned: defenses are better, or at least more complex than they used to be, and teams are more willing to sacrifice shooting from some players if those players are excellent defenders. But also more and more players are entering the professional leagues lacking the fundamentals of shooting.

2 - Overall FG% is declining primarily because more 3 pointers have been taken annually: despite more attempts the overall 3 points FG% has increased.

3 - But looking at Scoring FG% ( combining 2 pointers, 3 pointers, and Free Throws ) rather than overall FG%, the European leagues has had similar Scoring FG%s of 50.3% (in 98-99) to 53.4% (in 84-85), as it was years ago.

4 - New rule changes like hand checking, had opened up offenses and also the players take more high-risk, high-reward shots, so we can't say that shooting itself is worse.

Statistician's Digest:
Free Throws Line Up - Rules Differences & Statistics Registration

At NF - National Federation (U.S. High School):
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- as many as 8 players can be on the lane (4 each side), and you could have 5 from one team, as any vacant spot can be filled by an opponent.

At NCAA, NBA, FIBA:
a- teams are entitled to alternating spots on the lane, with the opponents of the free shooter getting the spots closest to the basket.
b- only a maximum of 5 players may be on the lane: 3 opponents of the shooter and 2 teammates.

At NBA:
c- the lowest 4 spots MUST be filled on the final throw.

At FIBA:
c- any of the spots may be empty, but must remain empty if the team entitled to them does not fill it.

At NF, NCAA, FIBA:
d- players not in marked lane spots, must remain outside the 3 point arc and behind the free throw line extended until the ball strikes the ring.

At NBA:
d- this part of the rule is somewhat more liberal.

Free Throws Line Up
Photograph: Basketball_China

Free throws are an organised process, for the statistician too. Let us see something about the basketball statistics register in this case. Really, is the shoot we have all the time to register data. The shooter takes his place behind the free throw line (4.5 metres or 15 feet from the basket). All other players must stand in their correct places until the ball leaves the shooter's hands:

The number of players allowed by the rule - according the last message - lines up along the sides of the restricted area (keyhole, paint, lane). These players are normally the ones that rebound the ball. Three or four line up on one side and two or four on the other. In all the rules, a defensive player always takes the place closest to the basket.

The remaining players, must remain behind the three point line and the free throw line extended (an imaginary line extended from the free throw line in both directions to the sidelines).

Leaving their designated places before the ball leaves the shooter's hands, interfering with the ball, and (for the defensive team only) attempting to put off the shooter, are all violations. In addition, the shooter must release the ball within five seconds (ten in the NBA) and must not step on or over the free throw line until the ball touches the ring.

- A violation by the shooter cancels the free throw and the statistician register a missed free throw and a team rebound for the opponents, in case of last free throw;
- a violation by the defensive team results in a substitute free throw if the shooter missed and no stats register in the possessions counting, only at the play-by-play relate - see eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System;

- a violation by the offensive team or a shot that completely misses the ring and backboard results in the loss of possession to the defensive team (only if it is on the last free throw), the statistician register a missed last free-throw and a defensive team rebound on FT for the defensive team.

Statistician's Digest: Turnovers Statistics Cases & Registration

"... Team A has the ball in bounds. A1 double dribbles and the official indicates the violation. Before any player from Team B is handed the ball, Team B's Coach is called a technical foul for some reason, let's say an illegal player's change. How to register this play and to whom we must charge a turnover or the turnovers ? ...

eBA Statistical Registration= Team A will be awarded two free throws for an indirect technical, so we register:

1.- charge A1 with a Turnover ( forced or unforced: see 2.- );
2.- register a Team Steal in favour of Team B: if a close defense of a player of Team B caused the double dribble, this player is awarded with a Forced Steal ) and the A1's TO will be forced ).
3.- charge Team B with a Team Turnover in the category 'technical foul against Bench or Coach';
4.- register a Team Steal in favour of Team A, which give the possession of the awarded free throws.

Rules Corner: Shot & Foul: Change due injury & Statistics:

Great Basketball Pictures

" ...Player A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and is awarded free throws. Due to injury provoked at the contact, player A1 is not able to shoot the free throws:
1) Who determines the replacement shooter for Player 1 ?
2) How the statistician makes the statistical register in this case ? ..."

In all rules except NBA, the coach of Team A makes the decision. In the NBA the opposing team can select a player from Team A if the player is injured but not because of an unsportsmanlike act like the foul itself.

Commentary About the Rule= The injured player may remain in game with a time-out ( Rule 3-3-5, 6 ). If A1 is required to leave the game for blood or injury, the rule permits him to remain in the game if his team calls a time-out ( 60 or 30-second ), and the situation can be corrected by the end of the time-out. Teams may use successive time-outs to correct the situation if permitted by rule and if adequate time-outs remain. Under this rule, if a team desires to utilize a time-out and can rectify the situation by the time the ball will be put back in play, the affected player may remain in the game, and in this case, to shot the free-throws by himself. Naturally the only way a player required to leave the game due to injury or blood can remain in the game is if his team is granted at less one time-out.

eBA Statistical Registration= a received personal foul for A1, a made personal foul for team B player, change in the time determined by the game clock and the free throws, finally, there are registered to the player who shoots them, if this was your doubt

Coach's Digest: MOST HELPFUL SCOREBOOK STATS

Which are the most helpful scorebook stats, for example before going into the locker room at half time, according to the Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, and why ?

Logically, the best and first indicator of the winner is to be sure that the team that has the most points is my proper team..., and only after that, I see the most helpful scorebook stats:
Basketball Coach
- defensive touches tracked and shots inside the paint... ( how aggressive are we playing ? );
- number of fouls called on each team... ( who shoots the most free throws ? );
- rebounds... ( are our rebounds at 40+ / 50+ per game and we own the boards ? );
- turnovers, steals... ( are the immediate gratification you are looking for in a game...);
- the shot chart for both teams by quarter ( are we shooting to many jumpers and not attacking the rim ? );
- the shots by 4, 8, 16, 20 & 24 seconds report ( is this game pace our game pace? )
- missed layups... ( all the other problems will get over that as soon as players start making layups !);
- deflections... ( are we getting good pressure in the passing lanes ? );
- turnover/assist ratio for players and turnovers/steals ratio for the team ( more assists and steals, OK ? );
- OER (offensive efficiency rating)= total points scored divided by total possessions;
- DER (defensive efficiency rating)= total points allowed divided by total possessions;
- these last two stats take the tempo of the game out of the equation and give you a true sense of how effective you are at scoring and stopping the other team.
In my opinion, everything else is post-game analysis as proposed in my eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System.

Books Review: The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball

The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball

The Complete Guide to Girls' BasketballBy: Michael D. Mullaney

The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is far and away one of the the most complete books on the basics, fundamentals, and strategies of basketball. This is a great book for coaches at all levels; girl's or boy's.

The author has divided his book into 2 main sections of skills and drills. The Skills section is superbly organized beginning with Coaching Philosophy and then onto Offense, Defense, and Special Situations. The information is presented clearly and concisely with matching photographs on nearly every page showing the players performing what is written. Every page has interesting and humorous quotes from famous players, coaches, etc.

The Drills section is equally well done. It's like getting 2 books in one. Unlike other drill books, the diagrams are clear and the sequences are perfectly understandable without the reader needing to decipher what the author meant. Coach Mullaney continues the terrific photos in this section to keep what is usually a dry and difficult study in other dull books, a much more readable section.

Coach's Digest: Statistics Box Score Balance Error

"... We know that a properly completed box score should balance. The sum of the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.
What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ? ..."

As you says a properly completed box score should be balanced. To make this determination, the statistician should add the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams. This number should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.

Great Basketball Pictures

A better balance can be achieved if rebounds are kept according to whether they are 'offensive' or 'defensive' rebounds. This must include both team and dead-ball rebounds. In this case, the sum of Team A’s offensive rebounds and Team B’s defensive rebounds must equal the total number of missed shots by Team A. Also, the sum of Team B’s offensive rebounds and Team A’s defensive rebounds must equal the number of
missed shots by Team B.

Neither check guarantees that there are no mistakes, but they do indicate that mistakes are unlikely. If the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found, the
eBA System propose the following steps which may help:

1.- Check the dead-ball rebounds. Look at the number of two-shot fouls where the first FTA was missed.
2.- Check the team rebounds. Think about whether either team was awarded the ball for a throw-in when the ball went out of bounds after a shot.
3.- If you are working with live stats, if there was a feeling during the game that an individual should have been credited with another rebound, see if that will help. With the eBA System of Post Game Video Analysis, you'll have not this problem.
4.- Go back and decide whether another dead-ball rebound should be added.
5.- If the feeling is that the error is in the individual or team rebounds but there is no idea about which one or about which player, consider adjusting the team rebounds.

These suggestions are good if you are working with live stats and also can be used if there are too many rebounds.
And look for perfection, as we work with our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.

Statistician's Digest: Team Rebounds ~ Concept & Statistics

What exactly comprises and means a 'team rebound'?
In each situation a shot is taken and missed and possession may or may not change, but the rebound cannot be credited to an individual so it counts as a 'team rebound' for whichever team is awarded the ball.

A team rebound is awarded to the opponent team to the player who attempted the shot if, before the buzzer sounded, no player had gained control of the rebound.

A team rebound is awarded to the team to which the ball is awarded out of bounds or at the free throw line as a result of a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt. This includes circumstances when:
- the ball goes out of bounds without any player having secured possession;
- a final free attempt from a serial misses the rim;
- the shooter commits a free throw violation in a a final free attempt from a serial;
- a loose ball foul is called immediately following a missed field goal attempt or final free throw attempt;
- a last technical foul shot missed.
Great Basketball Pictures
A team rebound is awarded to a team that first gains possession following a jump ball when such a jump ball immediately follows a missed field goal attempt or a final free throw attempt, before any player is credited with an individual rebound.

A team rebound is awarded following a missed shot ( either field goal or last free throw ) when a live ball becomes dead due to the expiration of a period. A team rebound is credited to the opponent team to the player who attempted that shot.

About the differences between the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System and the NBA statistician's rules, for example, are developed in the eBA Clinics, and we'll discuss them in a next message in the eBA Forums.

Coach's Digest: Prevent Points from and Score More Points

"... In spite of all the formulas we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic, I think the principal question any statistician would have to ask is: what does the individual player do to prevent points from being scored ? and what does he do to enable his team to score more points than the other team ? Right ? ..."

That's right ! I just explained in one of my last expositions in eBA CLINICS ONLINE that... "as far as you analyze one's basketball team defense, the question any statistician would have to ask is: what does the individual player do to prevent points from being scored ? and what does he do to enable his team to score more points than the other team ?

Steals and defensive rebounds are distinctly important in that context, since each takes a possession away from the opponent.

Fouls are important, since a good batch of the time they directly lead to the opponent getting free throws. Blocked shots, while interesting for the fans, is of borderline value, since it only decreases the other teams FG%, and does not assure a change of possession. A + / - chart, indicating the margin of points the teams scores in relation to their opponent when a player is on the court, would also be useful, since it allows us to compare individual players to their teammates and to other players around the league.

Getting steals and creating turnovers with a trapping, opportunist defense, getting a lot of deflections and a lot of loose balls, means to annul the opponent transition game, and shows full and continue activity of the defender players.

Also the basketball weight trainers understand that basketball training or basketball weight training must be designed to optimally elevate the vertical jump, speed, and stamina on the court. This means more blocked shots, steals and successful fast breaks which will translate to more team wins !"

See you at eBA CLINICS ONLINE on October 1st., 2007, to go on with the discussion !

Coach's Digest: MVP Selection in a Tournament

A question was made to us via e-mail about the way to select MVP player in a tournament, and here is the answer we sent him.

There is no one exclusive way to select MVP player in a tournament. It's all depends on the organizers and sometimes on economical issues...
Generally the MVP races are not a bona fide race in the professional sports.
Clearly what defines the MVP is fairly subjective with opinions as diverse as the statistical conclusions: educated analysts pour arguments over numbers and stats.... so you can legitimately argue for a MVP case without mentioning his ability to play defense?

Great Basketball Pictures

Each League and tournament have it's system to elect the MVP:

MVP Awards Varsity teams elect their MVP via team vote.

The NBA TSF -The Starting Five- Voting Methodology:
Three (3) points were awarded for every first place vote in a given category.
Two (2) points were awarded for every second place vote in a given category.
One (1) point was awarded for every third place vote in a given category.
Each member of The Starting Five was asked to submit their top three choices in each category: MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, Most Improved Player, Comeback Player, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

The ULEB Euroleague awards for the best Starting five is done throughout a combination and sum of votes of players, coaches, journalist and fans through the ULEB´s web site.... this last possibility as you can preview give you the possibility of bombing the voting in favour of the player from your country....

And don't forget that Basketball is Business too... and for ULEB to select manually Papaloukas from CSKA (without arguing that he is not the best point guard in Europe now) as the "sixth man" of the Starting "Five" in the recent Final Four just in Athens, Papaloukas city, was a great publicity blow....!

In my opinion, the Starting Five and the MVP selection must be done via team players (with an influence of 30% on the selection), coaches (influence of 60%) and journalists (influence of 9%) votes... giving only a chance of 1% for the organizers, and if you want to "excite" the fans, therefore you can create special awards as "popular player" or something like this....

Rules Corner: SHOOTING TO THE WRONG BASKET: Rule & Statistics:

Great Basketball Pictures

" ...At the beginning of a period, team A is attacking/defending the correct basket when B1 by loss of orientation dribbles to the wrong basket and scores a field goal. Which is the rule and the stats registration ? ..."

Commentary About the Rule= Art. 9 clarifies which basket a team is to defend and which basket it is to attack. If by confusion any period begins with both teams attacking / defending the wrong baskets, the situation shall be corrected as soon as it is discovered, without placing either team at a disadvantage. Any points scored, time used, fouls charged, etc. before the stopping of the game remain valid.

eBA Statistical Registration= But in this case, the confusion is from one player, the points are counted and shall be awarded to the captain of team A, registering an Unforced Turnover against B1 and a Team Unforced Steal for Team A.

Coach's Digest: Possessions and Plays

In our Basketball Statistics eBA Clinics, we have broadly defined a possession as a basketball instance which starts when one team gains control ( possession ) of the ball and ends when the team abandons the control of the ball.
Now, plays have the same characteristics as possessions, other than offensive rebounds establish anew play. Plays are not equal for both teams, because a team can shoot, miss, rebound the ball many times, resulting in several plays for one team and no play for the opponent.
Many times, plays are referred as possessions, therefore we recommend to be careful about the terminology. Number of plays can be counted or estimated as:

Plays= FGA + 0,44xFTA + TO

In a recent post I explained my opinion about the multiplying factor 0,44 coefficient, saying about that "...the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis, looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE, remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE. ...".
Finally, "play percentage" is the percentage of plays on which at least one point is scored.

José Antonio, Josean, Querejeta (Lazkao, 1957), is the first man in the basketball in Spain with the double championship as player and as chairman: twice champion from the Spanish League with Real Madrid (in 1979 & 1980) and champion as Tau Vitoria's chairman in 2002.

Coach's Digest: Bad Dribble - It's Turnover... but is it a Steal ?

"... A1 is dribbling when he deal with the ball inefficiently and
it bounces toward B2, how we register this play ? Steal from B2 ....? but he was not the " the initiator of the action causing the turnover".... ! ...
"

Registration Fundamental= To earn a steal, the defensive player should be the initiator of the action causing the turnover, not just the benefactor. For NCCA and FIBA the steal should be a take-away, not just a recovery and not just a forced error. For us, according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, the "forced error" concept is different at all. See: eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

eBA Statistical Registration= A1 is charged with a turnover, and meanwhile NCAA & FIBA do not credit B2 with a steal as he did not initiate the action, I suggest the following:
analyze the action by means the game video-tape and credit B2 with a steal if there was although a minimal action of the player as the cause of the turnover, on the contrary a "team steal" will be registered.

From the eBA Statistics Glossary: Rating

1. Rating is a means of classifying things in different categories.
2. A position assigned on a scale; a standing.
3. A classification according to specialty or proficiency.
4. A specified performance limit, as of capacity, range, or operational capability: the power rating of a light fixture.

In online communities, rating means a reputation system, it is a type of collaborative filtering algorithm which attempts to determine ratings for a collection of entities, given a collection of opinions that those entities hold about each other. This is similar to a recommender system, but with the purpose of entities recommending each other, rather than some external set of entities (such as books, movies, or music).

Forum's Digest: Personal Fouls & Player's Evaluation

"... Why fouls are generally not even considered in evaluating and efficiency formulas ? ..."

There is a common misconception in the other basketball statistics analysis systems, specially at the live-game statistics, and personal fouls are generally not even considered when evaluating a player's talent. This error or "statistics myth" raised because the false concept that it is assumed everyone commits those personal fouls and they are unavoidable.

Great Basketball Pictures

Even, a foul means a defender has been caught out of position and has damaged his team by adding to a number that could eventually lead to free possessions via the Bonus.
But the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis have a rating of personal foul made and received and qualify each one as "good", "neutral" or "bad": the rating is explained in eBA Clinics Online and discussed in the "Statistics & Statisticians Board" in the forum, which is reserved for registered members.

Something like when 2 free throws are missed the foul actually becomes a positive for the fouling team much like a steal. If only one free throw is made it becomes a tie, nothing lost or gained. When 2 out of 3 free throws are made on the average the free throws become a negative for the fouling team. The situation in which the personal foul was committed, plays an important role in this personal fouls eBA analysis.

Points per Field Goal Attempt Formula: Concept & Application

In order to measure how strictly correctly a player or team is shooting we need statistics, and if possible a creative analysis of those basketball statistics.

Statisticians most often use the field goal percentage ( FG% ) to do it, but the added bonus of the three-point shot, for instance, isn't reflected in field goal percentage, and the ability to get to the free-throw line (where the points come much easier) is ignored as well.

"Points per Shot Attempt" (PSA): It's a stat designed to reflect the basics of good shooting: getting the greatest number of points from the fewest number of attempts. Points per shot attempt is simply points divided by shot attempts . Figuring shot attempts is like this: Add field goal attempts plus "Up to the Line" (for 2 or 3 free-throws). In case of analysis of another team and if you can't know how many times the player or the team reached the line, use (0.4 * FTA) instead.

PSA = Points / (Up to the Line + FGA)

Last years NBA league PSA average was something around 1.039 points per shot attempt, so by averaging, by example, 1.133 points per attempt, an average team gains a full point with every ten shots.

PSA is just as handy for rating individual players as it is for teams. Occasionally a player will break into the top ten who shoots nothing but dunks, but mostly it's the long shooters who are at the top of an individual PSA list.

This formula, with another fields formulas, are integrated in the exposition of the Basketball Statistics eBA Course: "Statistics Formulas Revision", which next course opens on Monday 01, October 2007 - 21:00 GMT, at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

Great Basketball Moments: First Game in History - 1891

NBA First Game Ever Photograph: Vedia PhotoStream

The first basketball game was played on December 21, 1891 in the YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, with 2 teams of nine players each. Mr. Naismith acted as referee and Mr. Stebbins, the school's janitor, stood ready with a ladder to retrieve the ball out of the basket should someone score. He did not get much exercise, because the final score was 1 - 0. This did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players, who had so much fun that they were hooked on basketball, named because peach baskets had been used for goals. This is a unique drawing of a japanese student from the school drawn "during that game".

Coach's Digest: THE FREE THROW MODIFIER

A typical formula to calculate the basketball possessions is:

Possessions= FGA Field Goals Attempted -OR Field Goals Attempted +TO Field Goals Attempted +0.4* Free Throws Attempted

In those traditional statistics systems, because two free throws do not always equal one possession (for example, in some situations one or three free throws may be awarded), they employs the multiplier 0,44 ( and sometimes 0,5 ) for free throws attempted, which is not always exact.

Free Throw Modifier: Basketball analysts express statistics in terms of possessions, so they need to make an adjustment for the fact that two free throws do not always constitute a possession. Three-point plays, three-shot fouls, and technicals all increase the number of free throws per possession. Therefore, those analysts need to use something less than 0.5 when multiplying by free throes to calculate possessions and revealed that the appropriate multiplier is 0.44.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis looking for exactness, register the real number of times the team reached the line for a serial of 2 or 3 free throws with the concept UP TO THE LINE , remarking between parenthesis the number of times the last throw was MADE.
This concept is fully explained and discussed at eBA CLINICS ONLINE.

Rules Corner: THROW-IN CROSSING THE PLANE:

Great Basketball Pictures

" ...Some question about throws-in rule and statistical register:
A1 is awarded a throw-in. While holding the ball, A1's hands crosses the plane of the boundary line so that the ball is above the in-bounds area. B2 catches the ball that is in A1's hands or taps the ball out of A1's hands. How we rule it and register the stats ? ..."

Commentary About the Rule= Before a thrower-in has released the ball on a throw-in, it is possible that the throwing-in motion could cause that player's hand(s) with the ball to break the plane of the boundary line separating the in-bounds area from the out-of-bounds area. In such situations, it continues to be the responsibility of the defending player to avoid interfering with the throw-in by contacting the ball while it is still in the hands of the thrower-in.

eBA Statistical Register= B2 has interfered with the throw-in, thereby delaying the resuming of the game. A warning shall be given to B2 and communicated to coach B and this warning shall apply to all team B players
for the remainder of the game. The repetition of a similar action by any team B player may result in a technical foul.
In the case described in your question, no statistical register is made, but if it was called a technical foul, a UNFORCED TURNOVER is charged against the offender player.

About the Video Analysis= One commentary about the rules to resume this topic: the defense may not break the plane of the line, if so they will receive a warning and then a technical foul. If the defense breaks the plane and touches the ball or the player BEFORE THE BALL IS RELEASED across the plane the penalty is a technical foul. When we analyze a basketball game we must have the video analysis help to decide the responsibility of each one of the player in this situation.
